Practical tipDuring fair weeks, hotels fill up months in advance: book early

Bologna is as much a business travel destination as a weekend break. A railway hub at the heart of Italy, home to one of the world’s oldest universities and one of Europe’s busiest exhibition centres, it draws professionals, exhibitors and conference delegates every year.

This guide is for anyone coming to Bologna for work: how the exhibition centre operates, which events fill the city, how to get there from the station, and what changes when you are choosing accommodation for a trade fair, a meeting or a congress rather than a holiday.

BolognaFiere: the exhibition centre

Bologna’s exhibition complex is located to the north-east of the historic centre, in the Fiera/Costituzione district, and is one of Italy’s leading trade fair venues. The main entrances face Piazza della Costituzione and Viale Aldo Moro, with additional access points (including the North entrance) activated depending on the event. The layout of entrances varies by event: always check the official event website before you arrive.

Unlike other exhibition centres built away from the city, Bologna’s is within the urban fabric: from the station it is reachable in a few minutes without complicated transfers. For business travellers this is a real advantage, as it cuts down the dead time between arrival, hotel and exhibition halls.

The trade fairs that fill the city

Bologna hosts a dense calendar of B2B events. The most prominent, which draw tens of thousands of trade visitors and tend to exhaust the city’s accommodation capacity:

  • Cersaie — International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings. 2026 edition: 21–25 September 2026 at BolognaFiere.
  • Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna — one of the world’s leading cosmetics and beauty trade shows, typically held in spring. Check the current edition’s dates at cosmoprof.com.
  • SAIE — construction and building trade fair. Held in alternate years between Bologna and Bari: check the venue and dates for the year of your visit at saie.it.
  • Lineapelle — international trade show for leather, accessories and components for footwear and leather goods. Check the current edition’s dates on the official website.
  • Arte Fiera — historic modern and contemporary art fair, usually held in January or February. Check dates at artefiera.it.

Why this matters for accommodation: during these weeks demand for rooms in Bologna rises sharply and prices follow. If you already know you need to be at a trade fair, booking early is the difference between finding a room near the station and having to stay on the outskirts.

For up-to-date dates and pavilion information, always start from the official website of the individual event or the BolognaFiere calendar: events change schedule and sometimes venue from one year to the next.

Getting to the exhibition centre from the station

The key advantage of Bologna for business travellers is its central location: Bologna Centrale is one of Italy’s most important railway hubs, with high-speed services connecting it to Milan, Florence, Rome and Venice in reasonable times. From there, reaching the exhibition centre is straightforward.

By bus

From the station, lines 35 and 38 connect Bologna Centrale to Piazza della Costituzione, at the fair’s entrances. During fair weeks the bus is the most economical way to travel, though it can be crowded at peak times.

TPER urban tickets can be bought on board, from authorised retailers or via the Roger app. For major events, BolognaFiere and the Comune may run dedicated shuttle services between the station and the fair: it is worth checking the official event channels before your visit.

By taxi

Taxi is the quickest and most direct option: from the station to the exhibition centre takes approximately 10 minutes. Ideal if you are travelling with samples, stand materials or heavy luggage. Taxi ranks are available both at the station and at the fair entrances.

From the airport

Travellers arriving by air land at Marconi Airport, which is connected to Bologna Centrale by the Marconi Express, the monorail that reaches the station in a few minutes. From there you continue to the fair by bus or taxi. This makes the station the true hub of the business trip: you reach it both by train and from the airport, and from there you can get everywhere else.

Business stays: what really matters

When the trip is for work, priorities shift compared to a holiday. As hosts, here are the things that make the real difference for guests attending a trade fair or congress:

  • Proximity to the station. This is the number-one factor. From a room close to Bologna Centrale you can reach the fair, jump on a train for a meeting in another city and be back by evening without any logistical stress.
  • Flexible, self-service check-in. Work trains and flights arrive at awkward times. Self check-in means you do not have to coordinate arrival times with a reception desk when your flight is delayed.
  • A quiet base for the evening. After a day on the exhibition floor, a shower, a reliable Wi-Fi connection and a quiet room matter more than a long list of extras.
  • Fast communication. Being able to message on WhatsApp about a check-in time, a document for the company invoice or a piece of information — and get a quick reply — is worth more than any freephone number.

Invoicing and business expenses

For a business trip an invoice in the company’s name is almost always required. It is best to share the invoicing details (company name, VAT number, recipient code/PEC) at the time of booking, so the document is ready without a last-minute chase at the end of the stay.

Bologna Station Suites for business travellers

The three rooms — Single, Double with Jacuzzi and Deluxe Double with Balcony — are designed as a comfortable, private base: whether you are here for a day of meetings or the full week of Cersaie or Cosmoprof, you return to somewhere quiet, just steps from the homeward train.
