Cersaie is the fair that every autumn turns Bologna into the world capital of ceramic tile and bathroom design. Exhibitors from dozens of countries, architects, designers, buyers and contractors come to the city for five days: for those in the industry it is the appointment of the year, and for anyone visiting Bologna during that period it changes everything, starting with the availability of accommodation.
This guide is for those coming to Cersaie who need to sort out two practical things: how to travel between the station and the fairgrounds and where to stay without losing time on transfers. We write from a specific vantage point — Bologna Station Suites is a handful of metres from Bologna Centrale — so the advice you read is what we would give a guest who messages us asking “I need to be at the fair by 9, where do I set off from?”
What Cersaie Is and Why It Fills Bologna
Cersaie (International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings) has been held in Bologna for over forty years and is regarded as the world reference event for the sector. It takes place in the pavilions of BolognaFiere, the fairground complex to the north-east of the historic centre.
For 2026 the organisers brought the dates forward by one week: the edition will be held from 21 to 25 September 2026 rather than at the end of the month. The reason is logistical: the fairgrounds will host the Davis Cup tennis finals in the following week. It is a detail worth noting: anyone who booked looking at previous years’ calendars risks getting the wrong week.
Entry. Admission to the fair is free with prior online registration on the official website. It is worth registering before you leave and keeping the QR code or badge on your phone, so you avoid queues on your first day.
Note on dates. We report the 2026 dates from the BolognaFiere announcement. Before booking flights or trains, always double-check at cersaie.it.
Why Accommodation for Cersaie Should Be Booked Early
During major fairs the demand for rooms in Bologna rises and availability shrinks. It is not just a question of price: during Cersaie the properties closest to the station and the fairgrounds fill up well in advance, and those who book late often end up outside the city, facing a daily commute that eats into time and energy.
Three criteria that, in our experience, genuinely make a difference for those coming to work at the fair:
- Proximity to a transport hub, not necessarily to the fair itself. Staying next to the station means reaching the pavilions in a few minutes and, in the evening, having trains and restaurants within easy reach.
- Flexible check-in. Fair hours and work aperitivos do not coincide with traditional check-in times. Self check-in removes the need to “rush to collect the keys”.
- A quiet base. After eight hours on a pavilion floor, a silent room to walk back to is worth more than a handful of extra stars.
Bologna Station Suites is built precisely on this logic: rooms ~20 m from Bologna Centrale, so in the morning you catch the first bus or train to the fair and in the evening you walk back without a care.
How to Get to the Fairgrounds from the Station
BolognaFiere is roughly 4 km from Bologna Centrale. Setting off from a room near the station you have several options; below are the most practical ones during Cersaie.
By bus (the simplest option)
Urban lines TPER 35 and 38 connect the station area to the fairground entrances (Piazza della Costituzione and Viale Aldo Moro); for the return journey use lines 35 and 39. The journey by bus takes indicatively ~19 minutes.
Practical tips:
- Buy your ticket in advance or via the Roger app by TPER, which also lets you plan the route.
- During Cersaie the service is busier and often augmented: allow a few extra minutes, especially in the morning heading towards the pavilion opening times.
Line numbers and routes may change due to roadworks or fair-period enhancements. Always verify the current line for your travel date at tper.it or on the Roger app.
By train (Centrale–Fiera rail link)
The Servizio Ferroviario Metropolitano (SFM) provides a direct rail connection between Bologna Centrale and “Bologna Fiera” station along the city’s orbital rail line. It is the fastest option when running, as it bypasses city traffic entirely.
⚠️ Timetables and the actual activation of the Centrale–Fiera link must be verified for the Cersaie dates: dedicated services are often laid on during fair periods. Check at tper.it / sfmbo.it before relying on this option.
By taxi or on foot + bus
From the station a taxi reaches the fair in a few minutes outside peak hours; during Cersaie allow for queues and traffic approaching the pavilions. If you are travelling by car, remember that the historic centre is a ZTL (restricted traffic zone) and the fairgrounds have their own car parks, with free shuttle buses from the more remote car parks. Car park and shuttle details at bolognafiere.it.
Options summary
| Option | Indicative time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TPER bus 35 / 38 | ~19 min | Ticket via Roger app; busier during the fair |
| SFM train Centrale–Fiera | a few minutes | Verify timetables/dedicated services for Cersaie dates |
| Taxi | variable | Queues and traffic during fair peak hours |
Bologna Beyond the Fair: the Evening After the Pavilions
One of the advantages of staying near the station — rather than next to the pavilions — is that in the evening you are already in the city. Once the day at the fair is done, you head back towards the centre and everything is within reach: UNESCO porticoes, the trattorias of the Quadrilatero, a walk to Piazza Maggiore.
For exhibitors staying several days, it is also the best way to “switch off”: sitting down to a plate of tagliatelle al ragù instead of a pavilion sandwich changes the whole business trip. If you would like some pointers on what to do around the station, there is a dedicated guide in the blog section.
Cersaie is a work fair, but it is also an opportunity to get to know Bologna. A few minutes’ walk from our property takes you into the heart of the historic city: it is worth carving out at least one evening to experience it.
FAQ
When is Cersaie 2026? From 21 to 25 September 2026, at the BolognaFiere fairgrounds. The dates were brought forward by one week compared to the usual calendar, due to the Davis Cup tennis finals being hosted at the fairgrounds.
Is Cersaie entry free? Admission is free with prior online registration on the official website. It is worth registering before you arrive to avoid queues on first entry.
How far is the fairground from Bologna Centrale? Roughly 4 km. By bus (TPER lines 35 / 38) the journey takes around 19 minutes.
Is it better to stay near the fairgrounds or near the station? It depends on your priorities. Near the station you have the advantage of reaching both the fair (by bus/train) and the historic centre, and in the evenings you are already in the city for dinner and downtime. Bologna Station Suites is ~20 m from Bologna Centrale.
When should I book accommodation for Cersaie? As early as possible. During major fairs availability in Bologna drops sharply and properties near the station and fairgrounds sell out well in advance. Those who book late risk having to stay outside the city.
Do I need a car to get to Cersaie? No — in fact it is not recommended: the centre is a ZTL zone and traffic is heavy during fair days. Bus and train from the station are quicker and less stressful. Car park and shuttle details at bolognafiere.it.
